Les Langues

Vous avez sans aucun doute remarqué que la presque totalité des billets est écrite en français et en anglais.

Vous vous êtes sans doute demandé(e)s pour quelle(s) raison(s) j'utilise deux langues. La réponse est très simple. Les Anglophones ne connaissent pas toujours très bien les activités philosophiques des Francophones et réciproquement les Francophones ne sont pas bien informés des activités des Anglophones. Je me propose de faire une introduction susceptible d'intéresser les deux parties: rendre accessible les activités françaises aux Anglophones et les activités des Anglophones aux Francophones.



Les thèmes et les labels ("tags")

* Thèmes:
Inquiries reflète en partie les thèmes qui m'intéressent, vous y trouverez donc de nombreux billets qui concernent la logique, les mathématiques et l'épistémologie. Mais, comme l'indique la mention "other matters", vous pourrez lire des billets sur de nombreux autres sujets (philosophiques ou non): religion, politique, morale, économie, finance... À ceux qui préfèrent les arts, je suggère d'aller sur Inquiries concerning Arts.

En outre, je fais des "dossiers":"French Thought" en est un. Dans un dossier, je me livre à une analyse approfondie d'un thème, étendue sur une longue série de billets. Par exemple, "French Thought", sera constitué d'un ensemble de fiches de lecture ou de compte-rendus de livres et d'articles qui concernent (pro et contra) le Postmodernisme ("French Thought", chez les Anglophones). Je discuterai ces livres: Impostures intellectuelles, Beyond the Hoax (Sokal), Prodiges et vertiges de l'analogie, Rationalité et cynisme (Bouveresse), Écriture et différence (Derrida), Être et événement I and II (Badiou), Whose Science? Whose knowledge? (Sandra Harding)... et bien d'autres encore. Un dossier n'est publié qu'au moment où il est terminé. J'espère que ces dossiers vous intéresseront.

Blogger me donne le pouvoir de modérer et d'effacer les commentaires comme je le souhaite. Sachez que je n'hésiterais pas utiliser ce pouvoir si certains commentaires sont délibéremment insultants, irrespectueux et cherchent intentionnellement à dégrader la bonne entente et les bonnes relations entre les participants.

Ce weblog est principalement consacré aux raisonnements et aux concepts, et prend peu en compte les considérations personnelles. Voici quelques indications sur ma personne.

J'ai étudié les Lettres Modernes (sous la direction de Bertrand Marchal) et la Philosophie, à Lyon, à Paris-IV-Sorbonne et à Warwick University (UK).

Je suis marié et suis le père de deux adorables filles: Esther (2006) and Alma (2008).

Welcome to Inquiries concerning Logic, Philosophy and other Matters. It may be your first visit here and you may need some notes about what you will find here. Please, let me be your guide (though I am not Virgil and this is not the Inferno...).


Linguistic policy

As you may have noticed, almost every post is bilingual: French and (British) English. French is my mother tongue, so you may find some faults, some clumsy expressions... when I am writing in English. Please do not hesitate to tell me when I am wrong (without being rude, if possible).

Why am I using two tongues? The answer is simple: English speakers do not know very well French Philosophy and Science and French speakers too often ignore the works of English speakers. My goal is to give an introduction to French-speaking activities to English speakers and an introduction to English-speaking activities to French speakers.

You may use the one you are more familiar with.

Besides the regular posts I do extra features. "French Thought" is one of them (actually the first). To put it in a nutshell, I analyze with more details an issue. I studied Philosophy and French contemporary Literature in Lyon, Paris-Sorbonne and Warwick University (UK).

My main academic interests are: Mathematical Logic, Philosophy of Logic, Cognitive-Sciences, Epistemology...

I am a married man and the father of two beautiful daughters: Esther (2006) and Alma (2008).

Chers lecteurs,

À cette heure, je rassemble des matériaux, j’analyse des données, j’organise mes travaux, afin de proposer des messages intéressants, construits et pertinents. C’est pourquoi je ne publierai rien (ou presque) pendant une longue période.
Cependant, je viens régulièrement sur mon blog. Je répondrais avec plaisir à vos commentaires, si, vous, passants, voulez bien laisser quelques mots.
J’ai organisé thématiquement les messages à venir. Le premier ensemble portera sur la pensée française ou ce que les Anglo-saxons nomment French thought. Je me propose de vous faire parcourir la pensée de Derrida, Lyotard et Badiou. Ils seront soumis à une évaluation intellectuelle la plus honnête et rigoureuse possible. Ce panorama sera complété par des présentations des analyses de Jacques Bouveresse sur le postmodernisme et la déconstruction, et une analyse sociologique de la philosophie française (Louis Pinto).
L’ensemble suivant aura pour objet le problème du corps et de l’esprit, du point de vue de la philosophie contemporaine. Vous pourrez lire des exposés et des analyses sur les sciences cognitives, le béhaviorisme, l’épiphénoménalisme, le panpsychisme…
Je n’ai pas encore déterminé l’objet du troisième ensemble. Une analyse des travaux mathématiques et logiques de Bertrand Russell ? Un parcours des théories de la démonstration en logique ? Peut-être un autre sujet…

Dear visitors,

I am at the present time doing the best I can to offer you the most interesting, relevant and articulated messages possible. I am working on references books, busy at organizing data and setting up good analysis. This is why I am not publishing any messages.
However, I come here very frequently to check the comments. And I would be pleased to answer to any.
Concerning the messages to come, I choose to write about French thought. Mainly, it will be an investigation of Derrida, Lyotard and Badiou’s thought. They will be confronted with the analysis of Jacques Bouveresse and Louis Pinto (sociological point of view).
Further messages will come, later, on the mind-body problem, from the nowadays point of view. I will discuss analysis of this problem by epiphenomenalism, functionnalism, panpsychism, neurosciences… And their issues.
I have not decided what will come after. But I will warn you when my decision is taken.

The Guardian and Narnia

As a reader, it took me some time to find the real quality level of the Guardian. I became aware thanks to the published articles about Narnia in the paper version (3/12/05, 5/12/05).

The journalists assume that the political and religious aspects of the movie produced by Disney (presented as nothing more than a piece of propaganda of the American neo-conservative views) are relevant to the interpretation of the C.S. Lewis’ masterpiece, written more than fifty years ago. Thus, when one of them writes about the movie: “Because here in Narnia is the perfect Republican, muscular Christianity for America -that warped, distorted neo-fascist strain that thinks might is proof of right”, she implies that we can find a kind of neo-fascism in the books. When I look for a high quality newspaper, I would expect a more nuanced approach or at least quotation marks around such problematic words took for granted.

The journalists do not pay attention on the fact that, even if there is a trace of “neo-fascism” in the world of fiction, it is not necessarily the ideology of the author. Actually, there is neither apology of the state, nor of imperialism, nor of a world ruled by terror and police, in the book. I can understand that probably agnostics are not able to perceive the meaning of faith and are prone to make some rather ridiculous caricatures when they try to interpret religious topics, but I can hardly figure out how a journalist can make such a political error, and on the top of that be totally tactless.

The third main mistake is the interpretation of the females’ presence in the book. I can admit that CS Lewis has not a feminist’s point of view. However, the interpretation of the journalist relies on factual errors: ”In Narnia, girls come second to boys… the principal representation of virtuous supernatural power is male, while the principal representation of evil power is the White Witch.” She should consider that the cause of evil is not a woman, but a male: Digory strikes the bell that wakes up the Witch (while Polly advises him not to do it). Furthermore, may I remind her and the reader that the only link between the supernatural and the common world is a female: Lucy goes into the wardrobe first, Lucy is the first to see Aslan in the Prince Caspian, while during all these times the boys deny it?

Neo-conservative, neo-fascist, sexist. And Christian. This is the last charge against CS Lewis. The journalists are afraid of Christianity because it is an “ideology”. I guess they mean that Christianism is a set of ideas which influences behaviours an thoughts, which, according to them, is antidemocratic. Is there no “ideology” behind democracy? Indeed, democracy relies on the freedom of choice. But do democrats not think about practical way of protecting the idea freedom? Do democrats not act accordingly to the precepts of democracy because they are the laws? Hopefully, democracy has an effect on our thought and comportment!

It is true that Narnia is not an apologia for democracy. However, it does not imply that it is irreconcilable with. They have some aspects in common: quest of goodness, justice and injustice, individuality, education…

As far as I am concerned, I would have said that a high quality newspaper should try to have some distance even from its own stances. Moreover, I expect from a good newspaper to rely on data and not on common opinions and clichés. I find it hard to discover such qualities in the Guardian, at least, on these articles.
